Reading With Ellen Aaku

Writers Project of Ghana and Vidya Bookstore presents Zambian writer Ellen Banda-Aaku at a special public reading session on 10th October 2015 at 4.30 PM.

Ellen Banda-Aaku’s first book for children, Wandi’s Little Voice, won the Macmillan Writer's Prize for Africa in 2004. In 2007 her story Sozi's Box was the overall winner of the Commonwealth Short Story Competition. Her first novel, Patchwork, won the Penguin Prize for African writing and was short-listed for the Commonwealth Book Prize. In 2014 Patchwork was translated into German.

Ellen, who has published one novel and six books for children, is a regular facilitator at the FEMRITE (Uganda Women Writers Association) annual Africa women writers' residency and she has conducted creative writing workshops in Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda and Zambia. Ellen judged on the Macmillan Prize for African Writing in 2006, the Malawi Peer Gynt National Novel Writing Competition in 2013, and the Writivisim Short Story Competition in 2014.

Ellen holds an MA in Creative Writing and has been an external examiner on the University of Cape Town’s Masters in Creative Writing Program.
