Author for July -- Benjamin Kwakye

For the month of July, Writers Project of Ghana and Goethe-Institut Ghana proudly present novelist and poet Benjamin Kwakye as the author for the month of July, 2018. Benjamin Kwakye is the winner of two Commonwealth Prize for Literature Awards for his novels The Clothes of Nakedness and The Sun by Night.

Benjamin Kwakye's other literary awards include the 2011 IPPY Gold Award for Adult Multicultural Fiction for The Other Crucifix. He is also author of three other novels: Legacy of Phantoms, The Three Books of Shama and The Count's False Banquet. He has also published an epic poem, Scrolls of the Living Night and a two collections of poetry, Soul to Song and Tongues of a Jealous Wind, a collection of short stories, The Executioner's Confession, and a collection of novellas, Eyes of the Slain Woman.

Literary scholar Eustace Palmer has described Kwakye's collection of poems, Songs of a Jealous Wind, as an "impressive collection" that "continues to reinforce (Kwakye's) claim to being incontestably in the front rank of African writers."

Kwakye has served as a resident novelist for Window to Africa Radio and Afriscope Radio in the Chicago area. As resident novelist, he reviewed a number of African and African related titles on the air. He is currently Vice President and Associate General Counsel at a global payments processing company. He is also the director of The Africa Education Initiative, which is dedicated to promoting science education in Africa.

Benjamin Kwakye attended the Presbyterian Secondary School (Presec). He also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College and a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School.
